From the Archives: Big Hits

Each Wednesday I highlight an image from my archives.  The practice of reviewing old images provides both inspiration and motivation as well as the opportunity for self-critique and the ability to see how much you have developed as a photographer.
This week’s image from the archives comes from a September 15, 2017 High School Football game between MJCA and The King’s Academy.  Darius Hylick, the touted running back at MJCA, also plays a little defense.  Rarely does he have a problem lowering the boom when the opportunity presents itself.  Grabbing these images has a lot to do with timing – with is harder, sometimes, than it sounds.

Week In Review – Oct 1 2018

Over the last week I was able to photograph four different games in 3 different sports.  To say I had a bit of fun last week would be an understatement.  It was also a bit hectic, schedule-wise, as the rain made for shifting game times/locations.

First up was High School Girls Volleyball as two top teams in the area clashed – Stewarts Creek hosting Dickson Co. The visiting Cougars needed 5 sets but put away the hosting Red Hawks.

Next was Friday Night Lights…sort of.. Due to about 6 different changes the first game was at 4:30pm on Friday.  While it was not under the lights and an odd time for a high school football game in Middle Tennessee, it was nice to shoot sub 100 ISOs and 1200+/sec shutter speeds.  It was a close game at half with hosts Lavergne Wolverines edging out the Bears from Antioch 28-27.  However, home field advantage was true to it’s name and Lavergne pulled away putting up another 16 points, shutting out the Bears in the second half for a final 44-27 victory.

For the second game of the evening I headed to Siegel High School as the Bulldogs from Smyrna High School came to town.  After some initial action from the Stars, it was all Bulldogs all the time after that.  The Bulldogs finished off the Stars 31-6.

The final game of the week was a High School Girls Soccer rivalry between hosts Smyrna and visiting Lavergne.  Lavergne struck early off a beautiful counter-attack goal with Smyrna equalizing shortly after.  The 1-1 draw headed into halftime stood fast as the final result.

From the Archives: Fall Football

Each Wednesday I highlight an image from my archives.  The practice of reviewing old images provides both inspiration and motivation as well as the opportunity for self-critique and the ability to see how much you have developed as a photographer.
This week’s image from the archives comes from last football season in the second round of the TSSAA playoffs.  I chose this image because fall is right around the corner and I am definitely looking toward cooler weather.  It was about 25 degrees around game time when the Saints of MJCA took on the Bears from Davidson Academy.  Caylor Bates had his eyes set square on the QB and took him down.  I love football in the cold weather and I love when defensive ends have a head hunter mentality.  Both usually make for great images.
